The Great Going Forth at the Anomiya River

We are pleased to share a new entry in the Nekhor app: the Anomiya River, where Buddha Shakyamuni left the householder’s life behind.
The Anomiya lay in the territory of the Mallas, beyond the border of the Shakya republic. The river was a boundary in more than the ordinary sense. To cross it was to leave the jurisdiction of kings and the safety of the clan for the life of a wanderer. Here, on its bank, the prince performed the Great Going Forth, the pravrajya, and passed from householder to seeker.
The Anomiya follows Kapilavastu, the palace he rode out of that night.
